Presidents Report  October 2023

This is a great time of year for carving ideas. You have the beautiful fall colors, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Go out and pick a leaf that you like, use it for a pattern and carve a relief of it. You might paint it with blending fall colors for colorful leaf. Thanksgiving relief carvings of thanks and the bounty of fall crops make nice carvings, also. And then there is Christmas with a bounty of carving possibilities.

Wishing the best to Denny and Becky on your move to Arizona. You will be missed.

Keep the knives sharp and the chips flying!

Secretary report for September 2023

Minutes of the regular monthly business meeting of Blackhawk Woodcarvers; held on, September 20, 2023 at Ken Rock Community Center, 625 Adams Street, Rockford, Illinois 61107.

Vice President Rich Dunphy opened the meeting with asking if there was any new business in the absence of President Don Stansfield.

Rich asked Steve Terrill to read the minutes of the August 16 meeting.  There were no additions or corrections and the minutes stood approved as read.

Bob Matthews noted that there was a walking stick available from Franklin Johnson, provided from his brother that is available for sale for $25.  There is also wood bark available for carving for those interested.

Hearing no other business, and having none himself, he proceeded to discussion of show and Tell.

Larry is in Kentucky and will not be reporting.  He passes on that we are solvent.

Respectfully submitted, Steve Terrill, recording secretary.

Show and Tell

 cardinal

owl

Bob Matthews brought in an Owl that he carved in a slice tree trunk that looked like a real owl and baby peeking out of a nest drilled in the tree trunk.  It was painted realistically.  He also brought in a pair of realistic carved and mounted cardinals, a male and female.  He used a ceramic pot for a base strewn with bird seed for a realistic effect.

 old nag

Jerome Mais brought in an old nag he carved of poplar wood.  He looked ready for the pasture.

Tyrone Johnsen brought in a prototype of an induction heater he designed and made to heat treat metal for carving knives.
