Presidents Report  August 2023

One of the description of a caricature carving is that it could never take its clothes off because of the oversized head, hands and feet. A well-designed caricature carving has proper proportions with exaggerations. A basic head is ninety degrees across the nose to the forehead and cheeks and the width of the head is divided into five equal parts: ear to the side of the eyelid to the nose at the eye, to the next eye, to the side of the eye, to the ear. The bottom of the nose extends out from the head the same distance the eye recedes from the forehead on each side of the nose. Eye shapes can determine the mood. Good comic strip artists make great use of this, as in "Zits" comics.

To master carving heads, do a series of the same head. Number them in the order you carve them and mount them on a base in the order they were carved for future study and carving new versions of them. One of the best caricature carvers in the country carved the same head every day for a month for perfection!

Don't forget the Janesville carving show in September. Seeing other carvers' work is an enjoyable learning experience.

Keep 'em sharp!

Keep the chips flying!

Happy carving.  Don Stansfield
