The Blackhawk Woodcarver

Volume XXV, Issue 11,  November 2018

Presidents Report

The deciduous trees are displaying their wonderful colors. I noted one particularly beautiful view of a Maple with its bright orange-red leaves slightly overlapping a yellow leaved tree on one side and a still green tree on the other; all still holding their leaves. Now the cold and wind are accelerating the dropping of the leaves. As the leaves drop, the tree structure becomes more evident and the trees form can be more fully appreciated. Such also is the form and grain structure in the wood we carve. Of course, more pronounced and interesting in some species and pieces than others. And here, I wonder at how successful some are at utilizing the characteristics a piece in producing an interesting and beautiful carving.

I was pleased that both Elaine Terrell and Roger Benedict agreed to my request to form a nominating committee for our 2019 officers. They immediately set upon working toward establishing the proposed slate for 2019.

I was also very pleased when Gordy Moscinski informed me that his wife Mary Moscinski and Becky Neubauer along with their husbands Gordy and Denny will head up the 2018 Christmas Party. Gordy’s proposed date is the morning of Wednesday, 12 December 2018. Our plan is to hold the party in the Multipurpose Room at Ken-Rock as we did last year.

I was pleased to see how much interest the attending members showed in the presentation on the Carved Quilt made by the club back in 2002 and is on permanent display at Klehm Arboretum. We have identified the carvers of about half of the 44 carved squares. I hope we will be able to identify all some day. I also wish to do the same with the Carved Quilt which is on displayed at the Center for Sight and Hearing.

This month we will have our last formal presentation of the year. Roger Benedict will interview a panel of some of our experienced carvers on their journey into woodcarving.

We are set for another month of carving and fellowship.

Blackhawk Carving Club Minutes October 2018

Minutes of the regular monthly business meeting of Blackhawk Woodcarvers, held on October 17, 2018, at 3218 Eleventh Street, Rockford, Illinois.

President Tyrone Johnsen opened the meeting at 9:00.

Minutes of the September 19 meeting were read by Larry Stenzel in the absence of Secretary Steve Terrill.  The minutes were approved as read.

Tyrone stated that the Christmas party in December will be in the large multi-purpose room we used to be in.  It is being fixed up and should be ready by then.  He said that we want to keep things as simple as possible, so we need many volunteers to pitch in.  We’ll use the same format as last year’s party.  John Skaggs suggested having our carvings set up in the meeting room and we eat in the big room.  Tony DeVita suggested that people might want to bring more regular food and fewer sweets.

There was some discussion about us being locked out two weeks ago due to a snafu.  One problem was that we didn’t have any contact info; we do now, so hopefully it won’t happen again.  At some point we may need to relocate but for now, this is our home.  Something to remember for this winter: if Rockford schools are having a snow day, so are we.  Even though it’s not a school anymore, the building won’t be open.  Elaine suggested that we get a schedule from the school stating scheduled closings.

Elaine Terrel and Roger Benedict are the nominating committee for lining up a slate of officers for the upcoming election.  John Skaggs will be stepping down as treasurer.

We had a slide show of the quilt made by Blackhawk Woodcarvers and on permanent display at Klehm Arboretum.  It was done in 2002 by over 20 members of the club to celebrate 150 years of Rockford.  It has 44 squares; the carvers of some of the squares have been identified; but a number have not been and current members are trying to recall who had carved them.  If you want to see the quilt, it’s at the visitor’s center at Klehm.
