The Blackhawk Woodcarving Club 15th
ANNUAL SHOW & COMPETITION
- The event is considered by everyone to have been quite successful. Five
different vendors graced our Show with their presence. There were 45 competitors
registered, with 128 carvings entered in the competition. This was up from 80 in
2008. They came from five different states. Yet, many of the winners were from
our home Club. About twenty exhibitors had their individual tables. A goodly
number of paid admissions. The new raffle system seems to have been well
received by visitors.
The highlight for Blackhawk was when Bob Capion’s
bark carving won three blue ribbons: First Place in Advanced Bark Carving,
Judges’ Choice, and Peoples’ Choice!
Names of winners and pictures of the winning entries will be available. (I
think, in CHIP CHATS magazine.)

- The two judges at work among the wood art. Dennis Neubauer from Des Moines,
Iowa, is a long- time carver, and the founder and owner of the Outback Carving
Tool Company, Des Moines, Iowa. Greg Wirtz is from up around Wisconsin Rapids,
Wisconsin, and is president of Affiliated Woodcarvers, and a sponsor of the
annual International Wood Congress in the Quad Cities, Iowa.
"Juried" Show or "Judged" Show ? Thank you, Larry
Christensen, for explaining to your Newsletter Editor that the Blackhawk
Woodcarvers’ Show is not a"juried" show. We have two judges, but they do not
constitute a "jury. To be a "juried" show, participants are selected from among
a larger group of applicants. Not everybody can get in just because they want
to.
Presumably, one could have a "juried" show which was only for displaying
selected art pieces. Of course, they could have a competition within a juried
show. A "judged" show is, by definition, a competition to select winners from
among the entries. And, in our case, entries are allowed into the competition
without regard to the quality of their art.
Paul Miller, owner of Fox Carving, 3005 Rapids
Drive, Racine, WI, has some good news for us. He is offering a 10% discount to
all Club members, on whatever you buy. He wanted our membership list to send out
discount cards, but such dispersal of personal data by the Club is against Club
policy. S0 - 0 - 0 Here is how this will work: you send Paul a photocopy of your
current membership card along with your name and address and a stamped
self-addressed envelope. He will mail back to you your very own Discount Card.
I’m not really clear on all the details of this deal, but it sounded pretty good
to me.
From Don Stansfield - The following cautions are
excerpted from the book Wood: Identification & Use,
which in turn was quoting the book A Splintered History
of Wood.
American mahogany, black cherry, and iroko - sawdust can cause giddiness.
Willow & birch - contact with these can cause reactions similar to an
aspirin allergy.
White cypress - the sawdust can lead to nasal cancer and swelling of the
eyelids.
Milky mangrove - its dust can cause temporary blindness. (Just the name
is a bit gaggy.)
Teak - its sawdust can lead to swelling of the scrotum and
over-sensitivity to light. (Look out for that teak!)
"Money isn’t everything, but it sure keeps the kids in touch !
BUSINESS MEETING
Wednesday, August 19, 2009
Gary Lundquist, Secretary
Secretary’s Report - Read, and approved as read.
Treasurer’s Report -Interim report read by
President Bob Hallstrom. The financial anomaly in
our bank account has been resolved . All figures balance now.
Membership Report - Dona
Wisner introduced a new member who had joined at the Show,
Bryan Steder, and visitors
Clayton Myers from Rockford and Wally
Himmelsbach from Lindenwood. Two other visitors,
Herman Hollingsworth and
Gerald Haney became members before they left that morning..
Newsletter Report - No report.
Club Member Directory - Getting close to
completion. Should be published by early October. There is still some
photography and copywriting to do. Not to mention the layouts and the printing &
binding.
Library Report - Bernie
Budzynski still has some of the Garage Sale stuff, as well as free back
issues of carving and woodworking magazines. New book on Bark Carving, donated
by Bob Hallstrom. Also, Bob
reported finding his "lost" VHS tape on sharpening, and he donated it to the
Club library.
Web Master Report - Check the Club web site.
Gordy is up North for the Summer. No in-person
report yet.
President Bob Hallstrom - Report and discussion
on the Show. It was a success. No one seems to have any serious complaints.
There are a few fine points that will be ironed out before next year.
OLD BUSINESS
VP Don Stansfield - Don gave some numbers on the
Show and continued discussion on the subject. There were 209 paid admissions to
the Show. Forty-five registered competitors from five states with 128 entries.
We could have had a few more Club members with work displayed on their own
tables. The Two-Raffle system worked out well. Only two Dala horses were sold
outright. Several more were taken as prizes in the Raffle. And several are still
left over. (Call Hallstrom, and maybe you can make
a deal on one. Or more!)
Bob Hallstrom questions the real value of the
place mat promotion. Apparently they were all put out too far in advance to do
much good.
Tony DeVita couldn’t be at the meeting, but
asked that special thanks be extended to all the wonderful helpers at the Raffle
station. He said that whatever he asked for, someone stepped forward immediately
to volunteer to help. Good work, guys!
NEW BUSINESS -
Our Meeting Room Rent has been raised to $600 per year. We understand this is
necessitated by increased utility costs.
Don Stansfield made a motion that Club dues be
raised to $25 a year, effective February 2010. This date will allow everyone who
pays promptly by January 2010 to renew their membership at the present rate of
$20 The new dues schedule becomes effective only for new members and present
members who are slow paying their renewal dues.
Don Stansfield made a second motion that the
"Half-year Membership" terminology be changed to "Associate Member." This is to
better describe the Carving Show Competitors who live out of town and are never
involved in the week-to-week activities of the Club. Their "dues" would be
$12.50 a year to cover the cost of the Newsletter and other mailing expenses.
The motion was tabled without a vote until the next business meeting, in
September.
COMMUNITY SERVICE -
Four members of Blackhawk Woodcarving Club went over to Boy Scout Troop 181
in Cherry Valley to help teach carving. They used Ivory Soap and crude
wooden carving tools. Many thanks to Tony Valdez,
Bernie Budzynski, Ozzie Webb,
and Gary Lundquist. (Insert photo)
CAPTION - Tony and Ozzie work with the boys to explain some of the finer
points of carving art. Photo by Gary L.
The Women’s Club of Redeemer Lutheran Church has contacted
Bob Hallstrom about giving a presentation at their
meeting, Thursday, November 5. This would include a display of carvings as well
as a talk with Q & A. Bob said he recommended the
ladies bring their husbands. Bob asked for
volunteers to put on this program.
SICK BAY REPORT
Franklin Johnson has been having a pretty tough
time. In and out of the hospital. His wife, Lois, reports he’s now at Van Matre
Rehab Hospital for recovery. 950 South Mulford Rd, Rockford, IL 61108.
Marshall Field, Jr. Is in OSF St. Anthony
hospital where he had colon surgery. 5666 East State St, Rockford, IL 61107
Karen Matthews, Bob’s
wife, had back surgery to fuse vertebrae. Monday after the Show. Thu is not the
first time for Karen. She has had back problems before this. 3703 Greenspier
Court, Belvidere, IL 61008
You can tell the difference between a black bear and a grizzly
by examining the scat (droppings, poop). If it has a sweet odor and contains
berries, it’s from a black bear. If it smells of pepper spray and contains tiny
bells, it’s from a grizzly.
THE PROGRAM
Club member Dolores Cascio and her friend,
Diane Mender, put on a very interesting program on
watercolor art. They had brought many of their watercolor pictures, and they
explained the "how and why" of each one. While Diane
and Dolores were showing and explaining their
watercolor pictures, Diane’s very attractive
granddaughter was posing for us to sketch. Afterward there was a brisk question
& answering session. Well received by the large crowd in attendance.
