ANNUAL BLACKHAWK WOODCARVERS’ SHOW - Special Recognition & many, many thanks to Vice President Don Stansfield for organizing and managing the Show. Also many thanks to John Wacker for arranging for us to have our show at Tebala Shrine Center. Reports from members have been most approving.. Much enthusiasm. Everyone is pleased with the venue, the food service, the judging setup, the display tables, atmosphere - everything. Attendance was 217 paid visitors. Down from our last year show, but attendance has been reported down at other carving shows this year as well. Even so, the operation was financially successful. Don had a fine crew of volunteers to help. These are just a few of the pictures Larry Clark got at the Show.

Maybe a neighbor kid has expressed interest in your carving. The Boy Scouts of America have a carving merit badge. Let’s recruit some!

2009 Blackhawk Woodcarvers show - Our 15th Annual show will be on August 15, 2009. The Tebala Shrine Center is already reserved for that date. That’s the 15th on the 15th, in case you didn’t catch the clever connection. And we are fortunate in being able to have the same judges as this year. It looks like the Show will be even greater next year than it was this year!

Annual Club Potluck Picnic is 4:00until 6:00PM, Tuesday, September 9, at the Twin Shelters in Sinnissippi Park, across from the golf clubhouse. Tony DeVita will be there much earlier getting the charcoal grills started. The Club furnishes charcoal & soft drinks. Each person/couple should sign up with Tony DeVita so he has an approximate head count, and to make sure we are not swamped with too many people bringing the same thing! If you missed the sign-up sheet at Wednesday carving, call Tony at his home - 815-654-2979. Brings your own meat to cook, plates, napkins, and silverware.

World-Famous Chip Carver, Wayne Barton will give a lecture and presentation on "The Art of Chip Carving" as part of Monroe’s 2008 Swiss Heritage Series at 7:00 PM Friday evening , October 10, in Turner hall, 1217 17th Avenue, Monroe, WI. Other information is available on the Internet at www.TurnerHallofMonroe.org, or by calling Turner Hall at 608-325-3461. A $5.00 free-will donation is suggested.

Wayne Barton was named USA "Woodcarver of the Year" in 2005. He is a professional woodcarver trained in Brienz, Switzerland; and the author of seven best-selling books on chip carving that have been published in six countries. Blackhawk Woodcarvers has some of his books in our library. His work has been recognized in a special exhibition at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. He is also a visiting artist/lecturer at the Chicago Art Institute. Wayne is a founder of the Alpine School of Woodcarving in Chicago.

MONTE SPRINKER CORRECTION - We wish to acknowledge Monte Sprinker as our club's first president.  Thankfully he keeps good records from the past.  Thank you for setting the record straight Monte.

Mary Lou & Anthony DeVita celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on September 6. Congratulations on making 50 years!

Pat Hartog & Husband celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in August. Congratulations, Pat!

NEW MEMBERS

Lois Bachelor, Sharon Knitter, and Don See - All three of these nice people come from Belvidere. Each one is already experienced in shaping wood. For proof, just check out the list of winners from the Carving Show. And take a gander at their work on any Wednesday morning.

"HACKSAW - One of a family of metal-cutting tools built on the Ouija Board principle. It transforms human energy into crooked, unpredictable motion; and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes."

¬ The PROGRAM ¬

Elaine Terrell demonstrated how she weaves baskets out of pine needles. She also showed some of her pine needle baskets, and explained how the craft works. It looks really complicated and difficult, but the results are beautiful. Elaine says that baskets like these can sell for hundreds of dollars each, depending on basket designs, decorations, and craftsmanship.

Elaine first showed the Long Leaf Pine needles she uses for her baskets. Then she demonstrated how the needles are bound into the basket shape with a special thread. Elaine says that some of the really great Indian baskets are woven so tightly that they are used to carry water.
