Meeting Times

There are two evening meetings per month, which are held at the Ken-Rock Community Center at 3218-11th Street, Rockford, IL.

The first meeting is on the first Tuesday and is an open carving meeting from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. Join the gang and bring your friends

The second meeting is on the third Tuesday, September 20th and is the business meeting, starting at 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM.

Every Wednesday is open carving from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Come and join the gang, bring a friend! Enjoy a taco.

All our meetings are aimed at enjoying one another passion for woodcarving. Always there is a lot of carving information traded back and forth, and of course the life interest stories, "three for a dollar" are worth the gas mileage and time.

August meeting notes

The Blackhawk Woodcarvers Monthly Business Meeting was called to order by President, Elaine Terrell.  Old minutes were read and approved.  There was no Treasurers report.

Old Business
There was some minimal discussion about the web site regarding the on-line show registration forms and $2 admission.  Generally this was a review of the site situation.

Ray Olson reminded everyone about the Amboy trip on August 20th

Roger Benedict mentioned the September 13th members and friends picnic at Sinissippi Park at the shelter house across from the golf start house.

New Business
Paul Miller, the show  tool vendor donated two books to our library.  The left over carved turtles should be sold at the Autumn Fest on October 8th & 9th

A lengthy discussion occurred about the show.  All were in agreement that we should continue there next year due to the excellent facility and friendly atmosphere.  Roger Benedict distributed a summary of the evaluation sheets.  All categories were between above average to excellent.  The only two categories showing a relative concern were the "judging floor plan" and " separate display and judging rooms."  The judging of course came up again.  Primarily the time frame was too long and not enough blue ribbons were awarded.  This will be addressed by a new committee of Don Stansfield, Roger Benedict, John Bibby, and Elaine Terrell.

Roger Benedict passed around a sign-up sheet for the Autumn Fest carving show & tell, carving demos and sale of carvings at Klehm Arboretum on October 8th & 9th

Meeting adjourned at 8:10 pm.

Show & Tell

Don Stansfield---Painted janitor (Eager) caricature.

Tony DeVita---A vertical tool sharpener built from a kitchen mix-master.

Larry Clark---Great show pictures shown on a laptop.

Clearing off the bench

The risk was worth it! The new show site at Klehm Arboretum and Botanic garden was well received by every attending carvers and the flow of visitors. We had a few bumps here and there, but our volunteers keep everything going as planned. The biggest blow was the gate still locked at 7:30 am; but someone did not read the memo about unlocking at 7:00 am. For the questions about the tables, the round tables were more than acceptable and allowed a free flow of visitors among the displays.

The facilities warm and airy ambience truly created a welcoming atmosphere that over came some negative feelings at the old gymnasium show site. Obviously we all had our work cutout for us. Everyone who signed up as volunteers was "Johnny on the spot." But hats off to Don Stansfield and the Gale & Elaine Terrell for there committed efforts during registration and direction of the judging tables. Larry Clark's several hours of photography is also on the applauding list. Obviously there are many names to mention, but the list goes on and on; with a chance of leaving someone out, I remain to stop here.

Mark your calendars for next January when we will start all over again to plan next year's show.

AUTUMN FEST

This annual event is held at Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden. We will be participating as last year in demonstrating and selling carvings. The Fest is Saturday and Sunday, October 8 & 9. Both days are from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The doors will be open at 9:00 am for table setup etc. Roger Benedict has a sign up sheet; so far there are five carvers signed for Saturday and three for Sunday. We need more carvers for Sunday, contact Roger for details.

AMBOY FIELD TRIP

A group of 14 people car-pooled to Amboy, IL to see several unique tree carvings in the local park. The carved tree trunks were the remains of a sever storm that went through Amboy several years ago. There were nearly two dozen carved statues of Native Americans and North America animals. Most statues were over 8-feet tall. A local farmer proposed the project and the town board established a promotional event with merchants covering the carvers' cost. After the viewing the statues the group settled into a lunch on the returned trip home. And finally, thanks to Ray Olson who organized this fine event.
