Presidents Report  March 2026

At our first carving session in February, fifteen of our members started carving a traditional Swedish Dala Horse following the leadership of Gordy Moscinski. Work progressed through the month and everyone appears to be involved in painting their carved horses. A couple of of horses have been completed and we have pictures of them in this issue. I expect to see a colorful herd on display at our monthly Show and Tell on the 18th of March. Our thanks to Gordy for putting together this popular activity.

Following our monthly business meeting and Show and Tell on the 18th of March, members are encouraged to bring, display, and/or describe a special tool or appliance they have made and utilize to aid in their carving activities.

Please remember that the annual RVC Center for Learning in Retirement (CLR) class “Beginning Wood Carving will begin April 1 (no fooling) and will run for five sessions through April 29. These classes will be held in the same room as our normal carving session and at the same time. The classes will be taught by Gordy Moscinski.

Plans are in progress to offer: a “Chip Carving Experience” led by Tom Houlahan; and a bird carving experience led by Nick Scheuer. The Chip Carving Experience may start in early May. Stay tuned for updates and further information.

Remember this is your club! It does not exist without you; and its success depends upon all of us.

The treasury performance will be reviewed in the future for comparative purposes.  Currently 36 members and 6 or 7 have not paid from last year’s roster

Treasurer’s report by Betty Gregory:

We are in good shape and have capital.  Checks cleared paying bills; Christmas Party and first half of paying rent.  Deposits consisted of three memberships

Old Business

Gordy Moscinski is conducting a Dala Horse carving & painting class during our meetings---sixteen carvers are attending.  He also in the future will be holding a CLR carving class

New Business---none

Moved to adjourned at 9:40

Show and Tell

Large group of cavers displayed and discussed their excellent carvings

John Skaggs, John Gregory, Betty Gregory, Jim Foster, Richard Dunphey, Don Stansfield, Tyrone Johnson, and Tom Houlahan

Five members briefly shared their experiences in other woodcarving clubs

Tom Houlahan, early ‘80’s several clubs---North Suburban, Janesville, and Monroe.

John and Betty Gregory---North Arkansas Woodcarvers. Bigger group than us

Nick Scheuer, Dunland Cavers Indiana---no officers and no by-laws.  Meet once a month.

Gordy Moscinski. Northern WI, Lake Tomahawk Carving Club---free with no expenses and about 40 members both men and women.  Local newspaper mentions their club weekly, which creates visitors.  Youngsters are occasionally brought in by their grandpas.   The Sloan Center sponsors a Fall Festival where our club sets up three tables for carving demonstrations and some selling---often brings in new people.  Also active with carvers on Krazy Day is another effort to reach out to the community.

Respectfully Roger Benedict

A little humor

What did the wooden sculpture say to the chisel? "You really bring out the best in me."

Why don't woodcarvers ever get lost? Because they always follow the grain!

What do you call a woodcarver who tells great stories? A whittle comedian!
