There are two evening meetings per month, which are held at the Ken-Rock Community Center at 3218-11th Street, Rockford, IL.
The first meeting is on the first Tuesday and is an open carving meeting from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. Join the gang and bring your friends
The second meeting is on the third Tuesday, July 19th and is the business meeting, starting at 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
Every Wednesday is open carving from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Come and join the gang, bring a friend! Enjoy a taco.

All our meetings are aimed at enjoying one another passion for woodcarving. Always there is a lot of carving information traded back and forth, and of course the life interest stories, "three for a dollar" are worth the gas mileage and time.

The Blackhawk Woodcarvers Monthly Business Meeting was called to order by President, Elaine Terrell. Treasure's report was read. Membership survey to determine personal interests was distributed to be filled out, then returned to Gordon Moscinski for his evaluation and reporting to the membership. Liability insurance issue still remains with no local agents wanting to underwrite our club. However, John Wacker will do some personal investigation with his contacts. Show volunteer sign up sheets were handed out.

August 12----Set up the show from noon to 5 pm.
August 13---Show time, 10 to 4 pm.
September 13 ---Annual Picnic at Sinissippi Park shelter house. Eat at 5:30 pm.
October 8 & 9 --- Klehm Arboretum's fall show on Saturday and Sunday. As last year, this is a very good PR as well as a good turn out to sell your carvings and show off your talents.
Clearing off the bench
Generally it is unwise to present a personal method to sharpen tools, because of the obvious variations to obtain a sharpened tool. But this time I must ignore tradition and pass on something I discovered with power sharpening. First of all my shop sharpening system (low rpms) has four wheels; ruff grit, light grit, leather, and a buffing wheel. Nothing new here, right? However I noticed the unbelievable amount of hand & eye control when positioning the tool against the lower quadrant of a grit or leather wheel. This allowed me to look straight down where the wheel contacts the tool an actually view the progress of the sharpening process. Of course eye protection is used.
Usually carving demonstrations or sharpening articles show the tool near the top of the wheel. However, using the lower quadrant of the wheel is much more helpful to actually see what is happening at the tool edge. In fact to add further control I used an adjustable light (close onto the wheel/tool) to increase the efficiency of seeing while sharpening. No more do I fear the sharpening of a V-tool, it is now a piece of cake. If you are a doubting Thomas, send me all your V-tool sharpening business, I will be glad to charge for my services. Seriously, try this procedure and let me know your reaction; good or bad.
