WITH BOB HALLSTROM & DON STANSFIELD as the Show Managers for our 2010 Carving Show in August.  We can expect a couple of new wrinkles that should help increase the profit margin.

CHERRY VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY has on display a group of wood carvings by our own Roger Benedict. He is showing three stylized carvings, and nine reliefs. This exhibit is one in a series of monthly artists’ shows that the Library sponsors. The exhibit runs until January 6, 2010. Viewing hours are from 9AM - 8PM Monday thru Thursday, and 9AM ‘til 5PM Friday & Saturday.

HAVE YOU SEEN OUR CLUB HISTORY BOOK? Elaine Terrell gathered every scrap of information she could find, and put it all into orderly fashion in a big 3-ring binder. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should. It is really impressive.

If you have the chance, you should also check into our Club website on the Internet. (www.blackhawkcarving.com) Gordy Moscinski, our intrepid Webmaster, is uploading Elaine’s work onto the Internet.

LEE THOMAS brought his daughter, Anne, to two of our Wednesday sessions. She was quite taken with the artistry in wood. So much so that she even bought a set of carving tools. When she came in on October 28th with those tools, she attracted lots of attention. You should have seen all the old geezers huddling around her to give her advice. ( Like moths to a flame. Or flies to honey! )

Most important parts of a carving tool -

1 - The cutting edge.
2 - The nut on the handle.

NOTED CARICATURE CARVERS, Phil & Vicki Bishop, conducted their last on-the-road caricature carving seminar a couple of weeks ago at The Woodcraft Shop in Bettendorf, IA,.  From now on, they will teach only at the annual International Woodcarving Congress and at their home studio in Oklahoma. Two members of our Club, Dona & Tod Wisner, attended this seminar. Photo here shows the Bishops with Dona and Tod holding their completed carvings.            Click on picture to make it larger.

The Bishops will be holding 3-day and 5-day carving seminars at their studio in Elk City, Oklahoma. These are scheduled for March, April, and May. Then in July, August, September, October, and November. For information on these classes, see their website www.woodcarving.com ; or call them at 580-225-3109.

For this year, they will be teaching in July at the International Carving Congress in Iowa. After 43 years in the Quad Cities, this famous affair is moving to Maquoketa, Iowa. (See below)

SPECIAL NEWS RELEASE

From Larry Yudis

The Woodcraft Shop, Bettendorf, IA -

"After a 43-year run in the Quad City area (Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa), the International Woodcarvers Congress, sponsored by the Affiliated Wood Carvers, Ltd. (AWC), is moving north to Maquoketa, Ia.

"It is a small community about 42 miles directly north of the Quad Cities on Hwy 61. They are very friendly and helpful folks who are eager to have the Congress be a part of their community. The show and seminars will be held in Pearson Hall on the Jackson County Fairgrounds, 1212 E. Quarry Street.

"More information about Maquoketa and the Congress’ move will be available shortly on our website www.awcltd.org and in future newsletters, which go out to AWC members.

"Another big change for the Congress is the dates the show will be held. From 2010 on, we will be holding the Congress a week earlier than we have in the past. Here is a rundown of the festivities and dates:

June 12 & 13: Accepting carry-in carvings for competition.
June 14 & 15: Closed judging of competition pieces.
June 14 & 18: Various 1, 2, 3 and 5 Day seminars being held.
June 17 - 20: Show will be open to the public (Charge at the door).
June 19 & 20: Judges Critique Sessions.
June 19: Annual Awards Banquet.
June 20: Annual AWC Membership Meeting.

"If you would like to be a part of this historical move for the Congress, you can become a member of AWC for $15.00 a year ($20US for foreign members). Just send a check or money order to the PO Box below, made out to AWC Ltd.

"You don’t have to be a member to come see the show, but you do have to be a member of AWC to take any of the seminars offered. If you have any questions about the Congress or AWC, please feel free to give us a call or drop us a line.

OLD BUSINESS -

(None to speak of.)

NEW BUSINESS -

BOB HALLSTROM REPORTED that he and his wife, Nadine, visited the Artistry In Wood show in Dayton, Ohio, in early November. While he usually sees everything of interest in a woodcarving show in a couple of hours, he confessed to spending SIX HOURS in this show. Bob says this is a "must see’ event. If you are ever anywhere near Dayton at the time of the Show, don’t miss it!

BOB CAPION asked if anyone has seen a small, pocket notebook he has lost. It says "ABC Building Materials" on the cover, and it has listings for all his carvings.

GORDY MOSCINSKI suggested that we put Club minutes, Library listings, and any other vital Club information on flash drives. (Thumb drives, memory sticks) This would preserve the data in the event of a critical computer crash.

THE PROGRAM -

Leah Crull and Karen Weber, two physical therapists from Orthopedic Rehab Specialists of Rockford,, presented a great program on "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome."

They used a plastic take-apart hand and detailed literature to explain how the carpal tunnel transverse ligament works; what happens when it goes bad; and how the problem is fixed with surgery and exercise. Many questions. Much group discussion.

The presentation finished with a discussion on how the whole business is related to woodcarving. This part included a handout on "What to look for when selecting or modifying hand tools to provide a better fit with the user."

COMMUNITY SERVICE -

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, Frank Lay, Bob Hallstrom,, Dona & Tod Wisner, and Lonnie Hayes put on a program on "Wood Carving" for the Redeemer Lutheran Church Women’s Club.

Bob had made a special point of encouraging the church ladies to bring their husbands to the program,. About fifteen women and ten men showed up. Two or three expressed real interest in carving, and may visit our Wednesday sessions.

One husband turned out to be from now extinct Buckbee School, the same country school Tod had graduated from back in 1941. Not only is he interested in carving, but told Tod about the all-school reunion scheduled for 2010 All-in-all, a very profitable presentation.

OUR CLUB will conduct a Soap Carving Class with Scouts at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, January 14, 2010, in Cherry Valley. We still need a couple more volunteers to help out on this.

OSF St. Anthony Pediatric Ward sent a thank you note in appreciation for the Halloween Pins For Kids we carved.

SICK BAY REPORT -

FRANKLIN JOHNSON is back home, still recuperating. Strength isn’t too good yet, but spirit is great. He even started carving at home during Thanksgiving week. We look for him to bring his wife to the Club Christmas Party..

BOB MATTHEWS reports good things about his wife’s recovery from back surgery. Keep up the good work, Karen.

LEE THOMAS’ WIFE is coming along pretty well now.. They had a two-week visit by their daughter, Anne, from Boulder, CO.

JIM GRIPARIS underwent surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurism. Bob Matthews and Tony DeVita visited him Tuesday, November 17, and reported Jim was doing well. By the time you read this, Jim will have been up and out for quite a while.

"In all the parks of all the cities, You never see statues of committees."

SHOW & TELL -

Bob Matthews showed an Elf Owl perched on a piece of wormy butternut, and a dragon’s head "emerging from the pages of an open book." (While Bob is a bird specialist, he excuses the dragon project by saying, " Dragons have wings!"}.

Will Rottman showed a handsome floral relief carving, not yet with a finish on it.

Gordy Moscinski showed a Redhead Duck, which was developed and painted in the fashion of a working decoy. Very effective.

Meeting adjourned at 0940.
