A couple of serious Soap Carvers at Lockwood Park

The Lockwood Soap Carving event was a great success!
A big thank-you to Gary Lundquist (the coordinator), Gordy Moscinski, Steve Terrill and Arne Larsen. The day was chilly but there were never less than a half
dozen kid and parent carvers up to 27 at a time. Kids kept asking parents to do it at home. Looks like we will be back next year. Used 139 bars of soap!

Newsletter Editor’s note: This will be the second two month combined issue of the newsletter. Give us your feedback on how you like it or do not like it.

April 16 minutes in brief

There was discussion of looking for someone to take ownership of coordinat-
ing Summerfest on July 12 with the MidTown Association.

Roger announced his tour of the Art Museum on April 29.

There was discussion of importing rectangular tables to Tebala for the show
but the vote went for keeping the Tebala Round Tables.

Nametags are done. Thanks Denny.

Chuck Drewes put together a nice directory with color pictures. He will
investigate whether or not to have it printed.

Don congratulated Dave Meyer for the article in Wood Carving Magazine. (see
the summary in this newsletter).

September 27 we will again show at Severson Dells.

CLR (Center for Learning in Retirement) will have a show next May and would
like to display carvings created in the various woodcarving classes over the

Request for Carvings

Tony DeVita reminds us that the Show is coming up in August. We need carvings donated for the raffle which is a big moneymaker for the club. He asks everyone to carve something to be done by the end of July. You might want to donate something other than a carving.

Our New Show Co-Chairs

Bunny Nordheim and Martha Fitch will be calling you if you do
not volunteer for the August 16 Show. Beat the rush!

Congratulations!

to Dave Meyer for his worldwide fame for appearing in the British “”Wood Carving” magazine. P. 51 ff of the Mar/April Issue.

Sick Bay:

Gary Johnson had successful gall bladder surgery. Go Gary!

Bob Matthews had successful shoulder surgery but won’t be carving soon. It was not as bad as he thought or as good as he wanted. He still has his sense of humor.

Report from the Activities Committee

June 2

From the desk of Denny Neubauer and Bob Matthews
The painting of a Green Wing Teal is on hold while Bob recovers from
shoulder surgery. The original plan was for painting in June.

Upcoming Program Events
June 18th Bob Coleman will hold a Carving Demonstration.
July 16th Denny will hold a Judging Review.
August 16th Annual Carving Show at Tebala.
Denny and Bob

Congratulations

To Louie Cowan for his great personal success raising money for the
Muscular Dystrophy Walkathon and to the Local MD chapter!

At the April 16 meeting: Greg Wirtz did a very nice presentation on Intaglio and relief carving. He had lots of pointers so everyone learned something.

May 21 there was a very informative presentation on holding devices for carvers. Denny Neubauer, Roger Benedict, Gordy Moscinski, and Frank Lay each demonstrated a number of different devices and had a number of suggestions and tips. They all are interested in helping you get your own system that works. They not only had great designs but ideas of where to get the resourced you need.

Master photographer Larry Clark captures a multifunctional jig for holding relief carvings.

Denny’s jig for marking a uniform line.

Gordy’s holder for all objects at all angles.

For SALE!
Ted Faber is selling a 6” Craftsman Jointer for $150.00 and a 10”
Craftsman Radial Arm Saw for $300.00. Both are good tools in good shape. “They just don’t make them like the used to!” (ed.)
See Ted at the club or contact him at trfaber@gmail.com or 815-637-9971

SCAM ALERT!
Larry Clark brought up information that his brother Don shared about attempts to get you to renew your carving magazines through a nonauthorized company. Look carefully at your renewal notices and see if the price is
right and it comes from the magazine publisher, not a subscription service. If you are writing a check to someone other than the publisher, you are being scammed.
